Trabzon in Brief

A city that has witnessed a historical process of thousands of years can be successful in leaving a mark in the history of civilisation and in maintaining its presence only to the extent that it carries over its manmade riches to the present day.

Trabzon is one of such rare cities both in Turkey and in the world. The history of the city, which was first founded on top of a height between Zaganos and Tabakhane valleys, can easily be seen in its walls – first built by the founders of the city and later extended by the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans by new annexes and restorations – monasteries, mosques, bridges and tombs.

Trabzon has benefited from the advantage of being on the most important spot on the Silk Road where Europe and Asia, and Sea and land meet, and has been successful in becoming a trade centre.

The city has turned this economic advantage to a privilege and reached the apex of almost all areas of fine arts. The art and the elegance can easily be seen in the elegant carvings on the stones used in the buildings, in the skill in producing fine jewellery, necklaces, in its cotton textile that the Ottoman palace could never give up, and in the original forms of wool textile that have come down to us.

Trabzon, the mysterious city of the east that was much-frequented by many western travellers, has had its peculiar place in travel books with its poetic people, many temples, adorable endemic plants, wild but freely-flowing rivers, scented forests, beautiful high plateaus with colourful flowers, and the cemeteries where inscriptions containing lines that challenge death are carved.

This uninterrupted and strong historical memory of the city is reflected in the daily lives of its people, and this is reflected in the local cuisine with anchovy, corn bread and spring leaves. The region’s distinctive style is very obvious in “Horon” (the regional folk dance) which symbolises the struggle with the difficulties of life in a rugged terrain, the capability of its people to make fun of themselves by creating many jokes and riddles that show their practicality in solving problems and in challenging life – which cannot be seen in other regions.

Even though it was located in a remote part of the former Ottoman Empire, the strong historical memory of the people of Trabzon contributed to Atatürk’s struggle in lighting the torch of liberation in the Erzurum Congress to create the Republic of Turkey.

We would like to thank the Director of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Mehmet Oncel KOC; the Director of Trabzon Museum, Ms Nilgun YILMAZER; and the staff of the Directorate of Culture and Tourism, and many others who contributed to the publication of this book.
